As we strive to optimize officer performance through training, we want to introduce a powerful training approach that fosters growth and self-awareness: the Guided Discovery process.
Guided discovery is a teaching and learning approach that encourages learners to explore and discover concepts on their own, under the guidance of a trainer. Instead of giving officers information or direct answers, the trainer asks thought-provoking questions and offers prompts to help learners understand and discover the desired knowledge or skills. By empowering our officers to identify areas for improvement independently, we encourage them to take ownership of their professional growth and enhance their problem-solving abilities.
Guided Discovery Principles:
- Facilitate Self-Reflection: Encourage officers to assess their own performance and identify areas they want to enhance.
- Ask Open-Ended Questions: Use questions to guide officers in recognizing strengths and areas needing improvement.
- Allow officers to make mistakes: Often, officers learn the most from making mistakes. In this controlled environment, allow officers to figure out the right and wrong answers. When an officer fails to reach the correct answer, gently guide them toward a solution.
- Empower with Resources: Provide access to training materials and resources for self-improvement.
- Acknowledge Efforts: Recognize officers’ commitment to growth and their dedication to serving the community.
By embracing this approach, you may find your officers are better equipped to accept feedback and to retain training principles, leading to improved outcomes in the field.
